Before joining Smart Furniture, T. J. was a corporate attorney with Miller & Martin PLLC where he worked with early stage technology companies, assisting them with raising venture capital and related financing, structuring strategic alliances and joint ventures, and intellectual property licensing. He represented clients listed on NASDAQ and NYSE in public debt and securities offerings and acquisitions of other public companies.

T. J. was a co-founder of the Chattanooga Technology Council, previously serving as its President and Chairman, and remains active on the Board of Directors. He is on the Board of Directors of the Epilepsy Foundation of Chattanooga and Goodwill Industries. T. J. is a graduate of Leadership Chattanooga and was named one of Business Tennessee magazine's Top 30 Under 30 in 2005, and Chattanoogas Top 40 Under 40 in 2006.

T. J. received a B.S. (magna cum laude) from Middle Tennessee State University where he played linebacker and defensive end for the Blue Raiders as a scholarship athlete. He received a J.D. (cum laude) from the University Of Tennessee College Of Law where he was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and served on the Editorial Board of the Tennessee Law Review.
