Colin J. Parris, Ph.D.
Vice President, Digital Convergence
IBM Research

Dr. Parris is currently Vice President, Digital Convergence, in the IBM Research Group. Under his leadership IBM has formed an emerging business born from the IBM Innovation Jam around emerging technologies and virtual worlds. His business takes an (end-to-end systems perspective to bringing highly visual, interactive interfaces into the world of business, science, healthcare and education. He is currently a member of the IBM Integration and Values Team and on the Board of Governors of the IBM Academy of Technology.

In his previous role Dr. Parris was Vice President, System Assurance & Post-Sales Technical Support, in the IBM Systems and Technology Group. In this role he was responsible for end-to-end quality, system test, post-sales technical support, and lab-based STG services for all of the IBM server and storage products. These products include the IBM eServer System z, System i, System p, System x, and TotalStorage product families. He is also responsible for the quality, bench marking, and compliance testing of all high performance systems products.

Prior to his Systems role Dr. Parris was Vice President, Strategic Growth Development, in the IBM Systems and Technology Group. In this role his major responsibilities were the commercialization of the Blue Gene Supercomputer and Cell-Based Processor Systems technology. Prior to that Dr. Parris was Vice President, Technology, at the IBM Corporation. His main responsibilities included leading the IBM Corporate Technology Team which oversees the company's current and future technology directions and directing IBM’s talent activities to attract, develop, and retain top technical talent.

Dr. Parris has also held several other technical and business executive positions at IBM, Tivoli, and Prodigy Services Company. These positions include Director, Communication Sector Solutions and SWG WW Linux Integration Centers in the IBM Software Group, Director, OS/2 and Solutions Technology in the IBM Software Group, Solutions and Strategy organization, Vice President, Strategy and Solution Management, of the Net Gen Market group at Tivoli Systems, Director of Integrated Computing Environment (ICE) Solutions in the Network Computing Software Divisions (NCSD) in the IBM Software Group (SWG), the Director of Customer Care & Billing Development and Internet Technologies in the Communication Sector in IBM Global Industries, and the Director of Network Architecture at the Prodigy Services Company.

Dr. Parris has also had several research positions at IBM’s Thomas J. Watson Research Center and at (then) AT&T Bell Laboratories where he was actively involved in research in e-commerce, mobile agents, and high speed communication networks. He has published numerous papers and has patents in the areas of network management, multimedia systems, and mobile agents.

Dr. Parris has received a Doctorate of Philosophy in Electrical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley (Ph.D.E.E.), a Masters in the Science of Management (M.S.M) from Stanford University, Stanford (Sloan Fellow), a Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley (M.S.E.E.C.S), and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering at Howard University (B.S.E.E.).
